I grew up on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia in the small coal mining town of New Waterford. The combination of witnessing the beauty of this world-renowned island around me and catching the travel bug at an early age from traveling around North America with my parents peaked my interest in writing about and photographing this beautiful planet we call home. During my last year in high school, I really began immersing myself into the business of writing. I joined the Nova Scotia Writer's Federation, took some night classes and began working on my own projects. It wasn't until I moved away to Newfoundland in the year 2000 that I really started to take an interest in writing and traveling as more than just hobbies but career options. I completed my studies in Media Communications and decided to stay in St. John's, Newfoundland for another year. Ten years later, I was still there but found myself unemployed after the company I was working for went out of business. This forced me to make one of the biggest decisions of my life; remain in Newfoundland and look for other employment or move back home and start fresh there. In January of 2010, I moved back to Cape Breton and into my childhood home where my mother was still living and took the next two years to focus solely on my freelance career. This blog became my primary focus but I also wrote a number of articles that were published in both online and written publications all over North America, developed a love for photography and learned a lot about the business of travel writing while making many new connections in the business through social media.
Today, I am still writing and still traveling. I recently returned from a spectacular 2-week, independent tour of Costa Rica and have plans in the near future to travel to various places in Europe and Asia. When I am not writing or traveling, I enjoy photography, yoga, meditation, hiking, camping, stargazing, reading, doing research, biking, fishing and going on weekend road trips around my home province and the rest of The Maritimes.
